'i-am'
are pleased to announce a delicious project currently in development - Chilango is a fast and fresh Mexican chain concept, where customers can build their own gourmet burritos, tacos, salads and other meals from the freshest ingredients. Each meal is individually prepared to your taste, right before your eyes. 'i-am' were called upon to generate a new name ('Chilango') and to develop the brand's 'DNA' to ensure its personality reflected both the best of modern Mexican cuisine and urban culture with Latino fire and a lust for life. 'i-am' also created a new interior concept that captured the true essence of cool urban living, offering customers a choice of either dynamic dining or fast paced takeaway. With their surreal and hauntingly beautiful take on fashion design, Dutch duo Viktor & Rolf present this startling 15-year retrospective of their most innovative work. This theatre-like installation is the first time the designers have exhibited in the UK, so as lovers of innovative and surprising experiences, 'i-am' really recommend taking a peek into Viktor & Rolf's darkly glamorous parallel world of couture. Central to the exhibition is a gigantic yet graceful dollshouse ('The House of Viktor and Rolf'), featuring inhabitants dressed in exact replicas of the designers' most innovative creations. This utterly compelling collision of high-fashion and Alice in Wonderland theatrics is exhibiting until 21st September, and you'd be as mad as a hatter to miss out. www.barbican.org.uk / www.viktor-rolf.com

Since starting work with Chilango (see previous article) the 'i-am' team have developed a love of all things Mexican... so a trip to see Lucha Libre London at The Roundhouse in Camden was definitely in order. Translating from Spanish as "Free Fight", Lucha Libre is Mexico's vibrant, technicolour version of free wrestling. Wearing lurid masks, tights and superhero capes, the best of Mexico's wrestlers - or Luchadores - have jetted over to this cavernous north London venue for a breathless, action-packed assault on the senses. www.roundhouse.org

Infiltrate the queue streaming around the block, and sneak into one of Mexico City's most exclusive clubs. Rioma consists of a spectrum of glowing tables, bars and dancefloors, making the interior as eye-catching as the beautiful clientele. Bars, clubs and restaurants are the perfect sector for creating an all-encompassing theatrical customer experience, and Rioma doesn't disappoint. Prop up the bar while vibrantly-lit Mexican 'it' girls gyrate to electronica in the main space, or sip a tequila in one of the more subtly illuminated chillout zones. Rioma's premium vibe doesn't detract from its Mexican spirit however, with a mixed fun crowd of hard-drinking club kids and VIPs. Continuing this month's Mexican slant is Habita. Located in the fashionable Polanco district of Mexico City, this is one of the city's smartest and most contemporary boutique hotels. A minimal and modernist design approach has been taken to all rooms and communal areas including a partially-exposed deck area (pictured). With an enticing rooftop pool overlooking the glittering lights of Mexico City and a sleek bar area, the roof of Habita is fast becoming a popular drinking destination for the well-heeled and fashionable of Mexico City. www.designhotels.com

One of the most innovative tile-retailers around (and a client of 'i-am') Surface opens a ground-breaking third showroom this summer on Islington’s Essex Road. As pioneers of compelling brand experiences, ‘i-am’ are always on the look out for new and surprising design and architectural inspiration, and this month’s new Artist’s Playground exhibit does not disappoint. This contemporary mixed-media art affair is taking place in the sprawling grounds of Sudeley Castle in Gloucestershire, and features new site-specific work from Tom Dixon, Zaha Hadid and Carsten Höller, as well as a handful of emerging artists. The exhibition revolves around the theme of ‘Play’ with Kevin Francis Gray’s eerie tree-dweller installation and a mind-bending mirrored labyrinth from Jeppe Hein (both pictured) fitting suitably within the semi-ruins of Sudeley.
The Artists’ Playground is at Sudeley Castle, Gloucestershire until Oct 31 (contact: 01242 604357).

The restyle of department store Whiteley’s in Bayswater, west London continues with the opening of a new destination food hall on the ground floor. A cross between a premium supermarket and a farmers’ market , Food Inc. consists of 16 ’stalls’ including a glistening fresh fish counter, a cabinet of iced cupcakes, a patisserie and charcuterie. Described as ‘Borough Market without the muddy wellies’, the design and branding of Food Inc. is clean and vibrant, with each stall generously spaced to allow a relaxed stroll between zones. This is the kind of customer experience that ‘i-am’ champions. The branding is clear and coherent, and the arrangement of stalls allows easy navigation. And then there’s the food. Sourced by a Head Chef as opposed to a Retail Manager, Food Inc.’s point of difference is in it’s restaurant approach to food retail. Visit: www.food-inc.com / Food Inc. Whiteley’s Department Store, Queensway, London W2
